Disease Management Association Honors Industry Leaders
At its Recognizing Excellence Awards Ceremony

WASHINGTON, DC—The Disease Management Association of America (DMAA) announced the recipients of its 3rd Annual DMAA Recognizing Excellence Awards Program at the Annual Disease Management Leadership Forum held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in New Orleans. At the October 12th DMAA Recognizing Excellence Awards Luncheon, sponsored by American Healthways, the following individuals and companies were honored for their leadership in the field of disease management. The awards were presented by DMAA President, Victor Villagra, MD of Cigna Healthcare and Warren E. Todd, Executive Director of the DMAA.

In addition, a special George W. Merck Quality Award recognizing the contributions of employers in disease management was presented to the Southern Company of Atlanta, Georgia. This was the second year the Southern Company received recognition by DMAA for its work in disease management. GlaxoSmithKline was the only other previous winner of a DMAA Recognizing Excellence Award.

"In any new industry it is important to recognize and celebrate excellence and leadership. DMAA is therefore very pleased to publicly recognize these leaders in our industry as well as the many other individuals and companies nominated for the Recognizing Excellence Awards." noted Jonathan Lord, MD of Humana, incoming President and 2001 Forum Chairman. Award Chairman, Warren Todd also suggested that "the large increase in nominations this year is indicative of the increased growth and sophistication of the disease management industry".

DMAA also recognized several members of its organization for their special achievement and service to the organization. These included Richard Vance, MD of CorSolutions (Accreditation), Rose Maljanian, RN, MBA of Hartford Hospital and Neal Friedman, MD of Kaleida Health Systems (Quality & Research), Christobel Selecky of LifeMasters Self Care (Government Affairs), Catherine Van Vonno of Blue Cross Blue Shield/Federal Employee Program (Government Affairs), and Peter DiBiaso of BBK Communications (Finance/Budget Committee Chair).
